Happy professional holiday
Teaching combines wisdom with a young spirit, creativity with enormous energy, kindness with high standards. Only the most dedicated people carry the title of teacher, and the value of their work is impossible to measure.
We wish you a job that rewards the effort it demands. May your students stay curious and persistent, the kind you can be proud of. May you find common ground with colleagues, keep the respect you have earned, and remain both firm and remarkably attentive.
On this holiday we wish you success in every part of your work, warm words from your students, good health, optimism and wellbeing for your families.

When is Teachers' Day in Ukraine in 2026
The holiday moves each year and falls on the first Sunday of October. In 2026 that is Sunday, 4 October. Since most schools and universities are closed on Sunday, ceremonies, concerts and the traditional Student Self-Government Day usually take place on Friday, 2 October.
World Teachers' Day, established by UNESCO, is marked separately on 5 October. Educators in Ukraine effectively get two celebrations back to back.
| Year | Date |
|---|---|
| 2026 | Sunday, 4 October |
| 2027 | Sunday, 3 October |
| 2028 | Sunday, 1 October |
| 2029 | Sunday, 7 October |
How Teachers' Day came about
Prince Vasyl-Kostiantyn Ostrozkyi founds the Ostroh Academy, the first higher-education institution on Ukrainian lands.
Petro Mohyla merges the Lavra school with the Kyiv Brotherhood school. The result becomes the Kyiv-Mohyla Collegium, later an academy.
A professional holiday for teachers is introduced for the first Sunday of October.
The ILO and UNESCO adopt the Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, the first international document on the rights and standing of the profession.
On 11 September the President of Ukraine signs Decree No. 513/94 establishing Education Workers' Day on the first Sunday of October. The same year UNESCO launches World Teachers' Day on 5 October.
The holiday covers not only schoolteachers but also kindergarten educators, college and university lecturers, methodologists and vocational trainers.
Ukrainian education by the numbers
Secondary schools
Roughly this many schools, gymnasiums and lyceums operated in Ukraine in 2025, about 7,400 of them in rural areas.
Teaching staff
That is how many educators hold the secondary school system together despite demographic decline, migration and the war.
Pupils abroad
More than that many Ukrainian pupils continue their studies remotely, so their teachers run lessons for the classroom and the screen at once.
The tradition every graduate remembers
Student Self-Government Day: senior pupils take over the lessons, the timetable and even the head teacher's duties, while the staff spend a few hours back in the students' seats. The custom has survived for decades and remains the most popular way schools mark the day.
World records set by teachers
Years in the profession
Medarda de Jesus Leon de Uzcategui, known as La Maestra Chucha, taught in Caracas from 1911 to 1998. She opened her first school with her two sisters at the age of 12.
Years at one school
Glenda Akin spent 61 years and 43 days at Westmoreland High School in Tennessee before retiring in September 2024. The male record belongs to Paul Durietz: 54 years and 61 days.
Years teaching a language
Ren Zuyong taught Chinese at a middle school in Jiangsu province from 1959 until August 2017.
Participants in the largest chemistry lesson
The record was set by the Technopolis science centre and the Essenscia federation in Antwerp, Belgium.
Participants in the largest vocabulary lesson
Teacher Rajesh Thakar and Cambridge International School ran it in Gurgaon, India, on 21 May 2018.
Footwear for teachers: a practical checklist
Teachers stay on their feet for most of the working day: the classroom, the corridor, playground duty, stairs, the shelter. Work footwear has to survive several kilometres a day and still look right at a parents' meeting or a school assembly. Here is what to check before you buy.
For women
- A 3–5 cm heel, block or stacked. Keep stilettos for ceremonies rather than daily lessons.
- Leather or suede court shoes and loafers hold their shape instead of collapsing within a season.
- Ballet flats with arch support: a flat sole with no insole loads the heel.
- Mid-season ankle boots on a treaded sole for the walk to school in October and November.
- Polish factories Rylko, Simen and Nessi, Ukrainian lines Anna Lucci and ALLSY, plus Lonza models.
For men
- Classic derbies and oxfords in leather for lectures, thesis defences and formal events.
- Loafers and Chelsea boots sit between formal and comfortable, and go on in a second.
- Leather sneakers for everyday wear, including the N-SHOES Fabio line.
- Trainers and sports models from Reebok, Joma and DC for PE teachers and coaches.
- A flexible cushioned sole takes the load off the foot across a 6–8 hour day.
Two pairs instead of one
The simplest rule that works: one indoor pair and one for the commute. Leather dries out over 24 hours, the shoes keep their shape twice as long, and your foot is not locked into the same last all day. For leather and suede care, N-SHOES stocks Grunberg products.
