Skechers brand history: from distribution to in-house engineering
Skechers was founded in 1992 in Manhattan Beach, California. Robert Greenberg, who had already built and sold L.A. Gear, started out with his son Michael distributing Dr. Martens, but moved to his own designs within a year.
The breakthrough came with the 1993 Chrome Dome silhouette — a hybrid of sneaker and boot on a chunky lugged sole that landed squarely in the grunge aesthetic. The brand then expanded methodically: licensed men's and women's casual apparel from 1995, a women's platform footwear line in 1998, and children's collections.
