Browse the brands Ask about sizingShoes built for walking, not for the shop window
German shoemaking grew out of orthopaedics rather than the runway. What sets these brands apart is not the logo but the last: an anatomical arch support, a correctly shaped heel counter, a measured width fitting and a weight you notice after ten kilometres on city pavements.
That matters in practice here. Ukrainian pavements, winter de-icing salt, long walking commutes and uneven asphalt destroy a cheap pair within a single season. A full-grain leather pair on a polyurethane sole with a properly engineered last lasts three to five seasons and keeps its shape well beyond the break-in period.

What you will actually feel on your foot
Lightweight construction
German manufacturers deliberately cut the weight of a pair: foamed polyurethane soles instead of solid rubber, and a thinner but denser upper. A difference of 150–200 grams per shoe is something you notice by the end of a working day.
less fatiguelong distancesRemovable anatomical insole
Most models come with a removable arch-support insole. You can take it out and fit your own orthotic without losing the shoe's fit — which matters if you have flat feet or a valgus deformity.
orthotic friendlycustom insolesMembranes and treated uppers
Transitional and winter lines use water-repellent membranes and treated leather. The pair handles wet snow and rain while still breathing, unlike sealed rubber alternatives.
water resistantautumn and winterWidth fittings: H, K and G
This is what most mass-market brands simply do not offer. German manufacturers grade not only length but also the width of the last. If a shoe pinches at the sides even though the length is right, you need a different width fitting — not a different size.
Every N-SHOES product page lists the width fitting and the insole length in centimetres, so you can check it against your own foot measurement.
Narrow
Slim foot with a low instep. Classic court shoes and loafers.
Standard
The universal fitting — right for roughly 70% of customers.
Wide
Broad foot, high instep, swelling, or a bunion.

German sizing uses the European (EU) scale, but the figure to trust is the insole length. Measure your foot in the evening, standing, from heel to longest toe, then add 5–7 mm of room.
| EU size | Foot length, cm | Insole, cm | UK |
|---|---|---|---|
| 36 | 23.0 | 23.5 | 3.5 |
| 37 | 23.7 | 24.2 | 4 |
| 38 | 24.4 | 24.9 | 5 |
| 39 | 25.1 | 25.6 | 6 |
| 40 | 25.8 | 26.3 | 6.5 |
| 41 | 26.5 | 27.0 | 7.5 |
| 42 | 27.2 | 27.7 | 8 |
| 43 | 27.9 | 28.4 | 9 |
| 44 | 28.6 | 29.1 | 9.5 |
| 45 | 29.3 | 29.8 | 10.5 |
Three rules for choosing
- Measure both feetFor most people the left and right differ by 2–5 mm. Go by the larger one.
- Allow for the seasonFor winter models lined with natural fur, add 0.5 cm or take the next size up.
- Check the insole, not your usual sizeEach product page states the exact insole length — that is the most reliable reference point.
How to make a pair last several seasons
- Rotate two pairs: leather needs at least 24 hours to dry out completely from the inside
- Dry at room temperature only, stuffed with paper — radiators and fan heaters warp the last
- Treat the upper with a water repellent before each season; use a dedicated spray for suede and nubuck
- In winter, wipe off salt stains the same day, before the de-icer eats into the dye
- Use a shoehorn: a crushed heel counter is the single most common reason a pair gets thrown out
- Store in a box or a cloth bag rather than plastic, otherwise mould will develop

German footwear, briefly and to the point
Is all German footwear manufactured in Germany?
No. Most brands keep last development, engineering and quality control in Germany while producing at their own factories in Europe and Asia. Fit is determined by the last and the quality standard, so the comfort holds regardless of the country of assembly.
How does German footwear differ from Italian?
The Italian school works primarily with silhouette and aesthetics; the German one with the biomechanics of the foot. For a slim, elegant evening pair, look to Italy; if you walk 8,000–10,000 steps a day, look to Germany.
Can I exchange a pair if the size does not fit?
Yes. Unworn footwear in its original condition and packaging can be exchanged or returned within 14 days under Article 9 of Ukraine's Consumer Rights Protection Act.
Do German shoes run small or large?
Classic lines match the standard size chart. The exception is certain winter models lined with natural fur; where that applies, we flag the recommended size directly on the product page.
How much does German footwear cost in Ukraine?
Transitional-season models from mainstream lines start at roughly UAH 2,500, while premium full-grain leather brands start at around UAH 4,500. Check the product page for current pricing and size availability.
How can I tell the shoes are authentic?
Genuine pairs always carry the maker's marking on the insole and inside the shaft, a branded box with an article number, and supplier documentation. N-SHOES sources exclusively through official channels.
