International Day of Beauty: history, facts and records

Every 9 September the world marks the International Day of Beauty — a date established in 1995 by CIDESCO, the International Committee of Aesthetics and Cosmetology. It is a day about harmony, self-care and respect for yourself. And about the details that build an outfit. The N-SHOES online shoe store has gathered the full story behind the holiday and explains how one pair of shoes changes the way you carry yourself.

Reading time: about 7 minutes. Prepared by the N-SHOES team (shoes-poland.com.ua), Kharkiv, Ukraine.

A greeting from N-SHOES

Happy International Day of Beauty — the loveliest holiday of the year.

May beauty run through your life and fill every hour and every minute of your day.

May everything you touch be beautiful and bring joy to your heart.

Live happily, love, rejoice, laugh and value everything around you.

Happy holiday! The N-SHOES team

The holiday in three lines

The date is 9 September. The initiator is CIDESCO, the most respected professional body in the beauty industry. The idea is beauty as a balance of outward care and inner calm — not a set of imposed standards.

200+

History

How the International Day of Beauty began

The story starts in post-war Europe. In 1946 the first congress of aesthetics and cosmetology specialists met in Brussels: delegates from several countries joined forces to raise professional standards and share knowledge. That is how CIDESCO — Comité International d'Esthétique et de Cosmétologie — was born.

The organisation grew, and from 1957 its qualification was governed by a single international standard. A CIDESCO diploma is still considered one of the most prestigious credentials in cosmetology, and schools under its umbrella follow the same curriculum on every continent.

Almost half a century after its founding, in 1995, committee members proposed a separate day devoted to beauty in all its forms. They chose 9 September. At first it was a strictly professional occasion for cosmetologists, hairdressers and make-up artists, but its meaning widened over time: beauty became a shorthand for inner harmony, health and self-respect.

Traditions

How the day is marked worldwide and in Ukraine

Around the world

Salons run free consultations and make-up masterclasses, CIDESCO holds seminars on ethical cosmetology, Asian cities host festivals that blend traditional care rituals with current trends, and in the United States and Latin America the day is used for body-positivity campaigns featuring people whose looks fall outside modelling standards.

In Ukraine

In Ukrainian cities 9 September coincides with the start of the autumn beauty season: salons refresh their price lists and launch promotions, clothing and footwear stores roll out autumn collections, and brands lean into care and practicality. For fashion retail it is one of the first strong news hooks of the season after 1 September.

Facts worth knowing

Beauty, fashion and footwear

"Cosmetics" is a Greek word

The term comes from the Greek kosmetikē — the art of adorning and putting in order. It shares a root with "cosmos", which the ancient Greeks understood as order and harmony, the opposite of chaos.

The heel came from the cavalry

The high heel reached Europe not as a female ornament but as a practical feature of Persian riding boots: it held the foot in the stirrup. Only later did aristocrats turn it into a status symbol.

The red heels of Louis XIV

In seventeenth-century France a red heel signalled membership of the royal court: only the privileged were permitted to wear one. The history of heel fashion is first of all a history of power, not comfort.

Left and right came late

For centuries shoes were made on a straight last, identical for both feet. Separate left and right shoes only became standard in the nineteenth century — the true starting point of modern anatomical comfort.

Footwear as a museum piece

In 2014 the Brooklyn Museum in New York staged Killer Heels, an exhibition of more than 160 shoes spanning the sixteenth to the twenty-first century — proof that footwear belongs to art history.

A diploma recognised in 33 countries

The CIDESCO certificate is honoured across a network of more than 200 schools worldwide. Every two years the organisation presents awards for achievement in aesthetics, cosmetology and professional education.

Records

Footwear entries in the Guinness World Records

A beauty holiday is a good moment to recall how far the pursuit of spectacle can go. Both records below are officially verified.

3.96 m long

Largest high-heeled shoe

The giant shoe stands 2.82 metres tall and was built in Sfax, Tunisia, on 20 April 2019 by Dido Fashion Club, the national leather and shoe centre CNCC and UTICA Sfax. The attempt was staged to showcase the craft of local shoemakers and the growth potential of the region's footwear industry.

Guinness World Records
51 cm heel + 43 cm platform

Highest heels commercially available

These boots were produced by James Syiemiong (India) in February 2004. Technically they were sold to the public, but they cannot be worn day to day: shoes like this are made for the stage, for photo shoots and for exhibitions, not for the street.

In practice

Beauty starts with a step

An outfit is read from the ground up: people may forget the colour of your bag, but they always notice worn-down heel counters or a badly chosen heel height. Footwear is the one wardrobe item that works on your appearance and your health at the same time — the wrong pair changes your posture, your gait and the look on your face by the end of the day.

So the best gift to yourself on 9 September is not another impulse buy but a pair you can wear through a full working day without wanting to take them off. At the N-SHOES online shoe store we build the range on exactly that principle: natural materials, a well-designed last and honest sizing.

Checklist for the right pair

  • Insole length, not "my size"Measure your foot in the evening and compare it with the chart for that specific model.
  • Width fittingA narrow last on a wide foot is the main cause of rubbing and toe deformation.
  • Natural materialsLeather and suede hold their shape and let the foot breathe all day.
  • A 3–5 cm heelThe comfortable everyday range: it unloads the foot and lengthens the silhouette.
  • A sole for the seasonAutumn calls for deep tread and water resistance; city wear calls for cushioning.

Questions and answers

The essentials

When is the International Day of Beauty?

It falls on 9 September every year. The date is fixed and does not shift with the day of the week.

Who founded the holiday?

CIDESCO, the International Committee of Aesthetics and Cosmetology, founded in Brussels in 1946. Its members proposed a dedicated day of beauty, which was established in 1995.

Is it an official public holiday in Ukraine?

No. It is an unofficial international date and not a day off, but it is widely marked by the beauty industry and by fashion retail.

What heel height works for everyday wear?

The comfortable range for a full day is 3–5 cm. Above roughly 7 cm the load on the forefoot rises sharply, so those models are best alternated with flats.

How do I get the size right when ordering online?

Go by the insole length in centimetres given on the product page rather than your usual number. Where a model fits small or large, we say so in the description.

Can I return shoes that do not fit?

Yes, within 14 days, provided the shoes are unworn and complete and you have the proof of purchase.

N-SHOES — shoes you can be yourself in

The store has been trading since 15 August 2009. In that time we have learned the essential thing: beautiful shoes are the ones you stop thinking about ten minutes after leaving home. The online storefront is open around the clock, and sizing advice is free.

Happy International Day of Beauty. May every step be a confident one.
