Cyber Monday is the Monday after Thanksgiving in the US, when online shops cut their prices. Because Thanksgiving falls on the fourth Thursday of November, Cyber Monday moves between 26 November and 2 December. In 2025 it fell on 1 December, in 2026 it falls on 30 November and in 2027 on 29 November.
Origin of the name
The term was introduced by Shop.org, a division of the US National Retail Federation (NRF), in a press release in late November 2005. It was prompted by a survey in which 77% of online retailers reported a marked rise in sales on the Monday after Thanksgiving 2004. The explanation was simple: after the weekend, people returned to offices with fast internet and bought online what they had not managed to buy on Black Friday.
History
In the early years the day relied on office internet, and shop websites often could not cope with the traffic. In the 2010s the format spread beyond the US, with Cyber Monday taking hold in Canada, the UK, Brazil and across Europe. As shoppers moved to smartphones, the sale stretched to five days and became known as Cyber Week.
Records
According to Adobe Analytics, US online sales on Cyber Monday grew from $6.59 billion in 2017 to $14.25 billion in 2025. 2025 was the biggest online shopping day in US history: more than half of purchases were made on smartphones, and buy now, pay later passed $1 billion in a single day for the first time.
In Ukraine
Ukrainian e-commerce adopted the format together with Black Friday. Because both sales in Ukraine run mostly online, the line between them is blurred, and shops often combine them into a week of discounts. For online purchases, the Law of Ukraine on Consumer Protection gives 14 days to exchange or return non-food goods of proper quality if they have not been used and have kept their condition; a sale price does not cancel this right.
