Gorpcore is a fashion style in which clothing and footwear for hiking, camping and mountaineering are worn in everyday city life. It is built on functional pieces: fleece jackets, anoraks, cargo trousers, hiking boots and trail shoes, backpacks and technical accessories.
Etymology
The name combines the acronym GORP, "good old raisins and peanuts", the trail mix hikers carry, with the suffix -core, which in fashion slang denotes an aesthetic. The term spread in American fashion journalism in 2017.
History
Gorpcore followed normcore, the fashion for deliberately plain clothes, and the rise of functional wear in the late 2010s. Collaborations between outdoor and fashion brands and the demand for practical clothing during the pandemic made outdoor footwear part of the city wardrobe.
Footwear
The style's key shoes are mid hiking boots, low hiking shoes, trail runners and technical sandals. Typical features include a membrane, deep lugs, a protective toe cap, speed-lace hooks and contrasting overlays.
In the city
In the city gorpcore is valued for practicality: a membrane copes with slush, lugs grip wet tiles and ice, and insulation replaces heavy winter boots. The style is paired with classic pieces such as blazers, dresses and wool coats, contrasting function with elegance.
