CheckoutNew Year
New Year is the celebration of the start of a new calendar year, marked under the Gregorian calendar on the night of 31 December to 1 January. In Ukraine, 1 January is a public holiday. Under martial law, public holidays are not additional days off, so many businesses and shops set their own schedules.
Calendar reform
In 2023 the Orthodox Church of Ukraine and the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church switched to the Revised Julian calendar, and Christmas on 25 December became a public holiday. The winter cycle shifted: Generous Evening (Shchedryi Vechir) now falls on 31 December and St Basil's Day on 1 January, together with New Year.
Traditions
New Year traditions include decorating the tree, a festive dinner, carolling, and exchanging gifts and wishes. On the eve, many families sum up the year and make plans for the next.
Shoes as a gift
Shoes are a practical gift, but choosing them means knowing the size and width of the foot. If the size is unknown, keep the proof of purchase: good-quality shoes that do not fit can be exchanged within 14 days if kept in original condition.
