France to pay bonus for shoe, clothes repairs to cut waste

 5 minutes

The future of the fashion industry in France is beginning to take on a more sustainable shape. From October this year, residents of the country will be able to return from 6 to 25 euros for the repair of clothes and shoes under a new program developed by the French government. This event aims to reduce waste and support the repair industry and create jobs.

Around 700,000 tons of clothes are thrown away in France every year, most of which end up in landfills. The continued use of clothing and footwear, rather than their immediate replacement with new products, is becoming a key goal of the state-supported initiative.

As part of this program, which was introduced by the French Minister of the Environment, Berenger Couillard, clothing and footwear repair specialists will provide customers with discounts depending on the amount of repair. This will save you 6 euros for unraveled or unlined garments, 7 euros for defects in clothing or shoes, 8 euros for glued soles, and up to 25 euros for repairing leather shoes.

The goal of this initiative is to encourage consumers to choose more sustainable options, instead of instantly replacing old things with new ones. Maintaining and repairing clothing and footwear will help reduce waste and the overall environmental footprint of the fashion industry.

In addition, the program also aims to support repair shops, which can help create new jobs. It will be implemented by the eco-organization ReFashion.

However, this initiative caused discussion and doubts in the industry. Some businessmen fear the negative impact on the country's light industry, while fashion brands are concerned about the impact of the program on the prestige and exclusivity of their products.

New labeling rules are also being introduced to combat redundancy and support product longevity. They will include information about the environmental impact of the production of each specific item. This will allow consumers to make more informed choices and prefer products that are produced with an environmental dimension in mind.

This initiative is an important step towards a more sustainable and responsible fashion industry in France. It aims to change consumer and business perceptions about the use and disposal of clothing and footwear, and to promote a more sustainable lifestyle.
