Choosing winter footwear requires a responsible approach. A famous proverb says: "Prepare your sled in summer, and your cart in winter." It's actually a great idea — in early summer, many stores hold sales on winter collections, giving you the opportunity to buy high-quality shoes at a discount. Or you can buy a quality model from last year's collection at a reduced price during the season.
Today, stores amaze with a variety of models — footwear made of natural and synthetic materials, for every taste and budget. At N-SHOES, we have gathered the LONZA and ALLSY collections, which meet the highest quality standards for the Ukrainian climate.
"High-quality winter footwear will last more than one season and fully pay for itself."
Leather, fur, suede: how to choose
Genuine Leather
More practical, durable, and much healthier. Genuine leather feels warmer to the touch — this is the easiest way to distinguish it from artificial leather. Faux leather is colder and can crack or wrinkle with sharp temperature changes, forming ugly creases.
Fur Inside
Preference should be given to natural fur. It's easy to distinguish from artificial: natural fur has an even, matte sheen, while synthetic fur has shiny bristles. Natural fur retains heat better and provides the right microclimate for the foot.
Suede: for special occasions
Suede shoes are impractical for daily winter wear: they do not tolerate moisture and the reagents sprinkled on sidewalks well. But if you spend little time outside or want a spectacular festive option, suede is acceptable with proper care.
8 quality footwear parameters to check in the store
-
1
Flawless appearance Any scratches, loose seams, or stains are signs of a poor-quality product. Inspect the shoes in daylight from all sides.
-
2
Heel and toe hold their shape These areas should have special stiffeners inside. Press on the heel: if it bends or shifts, look for another model.
-
3
Inner lining: fur, insole, edges The insole should be soft, its edges evenly finished, not protruding. Seams should not be felt inside: this leads to chafing.
-
4
Secure sole attachment Make sure the sole is firmly glued and stitched around the entire perimeter. The lack of stitching does not indicate poor quality — modern shoe glues completely replace it.
-
5
Sole material and pattern Polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyurethane, and rubber have high water resistance. The more lugs and spikes on the sole, the less it slips on slick surfaces.
-
6
Heel: material and stability Do not buy winter shoes with plastic heels: they deform in the cold. Shoes with stilettos or very high heels are dangerous in winter — they are very slippery.
-
7
Quality of zippers and hardware The zipper should open and close effortlessly. Check that the lining does not get caught in the mechanism, and all seams around it are neat.
-
8
Boots don't pinch the calf The most popular women's models are tall and mid-calf boots. Choose a model with a wide shaft or adjustable lacing to ensure comfort with different sock thicknesses.
Which heel is suitable for winter
| Heel Type | Winter Safety | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Platform | Excellent | Stable, evenly distributes load, minimal slipping |
| Wedge | Good | A comfortable alternative for those who want height without the risk |
| Low block heel | Acceptable | Natural material and a thick sole are a must |
| Medium block heel | With caution | Depends on the sole pattern and tread in the toe area |
| Stiletto or kitten heel | Not recommended | Maximum slipping, high risk of injury from falling |
| Plastic heel of any height | Not recommended | Deforms in the cold, shifts under load |
Important: sole thickness in the toe area
Whichever model you choose, check the thickness of the sole at the front of the shoe. A sole that is too thin in the toe area does not protect against the cold from below and wears out quickly upon contact with ice and reagents. This is especially critical for platform and wedge shoes.
Winter sizing: what to look out for
Winter footwear should differ in size from summer and demi-season options. Your foot should sit comfortably: nothing should pinch, otherwise your feet will freeze and get tired due to tightness. At the same time, don't buy shoes with excessive room: footwear that is too loose quickly stretches out and loses its silhouette.
Feature of Polish manufacturing
Chinese footwear is often made "true to size" but frequently ends up running small. Polish manufacturers take this into account and use special lasts for winter shoes. Polish-made footwear, including LONZA and ALLSY, can safely be bought in your usual size — it is made taking into account thick winter socks.
Don't skimp on winter footwear
The price of winter footwear is determined by materials, production technology, and country of origin. The price is driven by genuine leather, high-quality hardware, a reliable sole, and quality control. A high-quality item simply cannot be cheap — and this rule is especially true for winter shoes.
Properly selected winter boots will serve you for more than one season and fully pay for themselves. The LONZA and ALLSY collections at N-SHOES offer the perfect balance between Polish manufacturing quality and an affordable price for the Ukrainian buyer.
