Sneakers are everyday shoes on a flexible rubber sole that combine the comfort of sports footwear with the look of a fashion pair. In Ukrainian the word often refers specifically to high-top trainers and platform or hidden-wedge sneakers, while in English sneakers is a general term for trainers and canvas shoes.

Etymology

The word comes from the English to sneak: the soft rubber sole let the wearer walk almost silently. The name took hold in the early 20th century, when rubber-soled shoes became widespread.

History

Rubber-soled shoes spread in the 19th century thanks to vulcanised rubber. In the 20th century canvas shoes and trainers became sports staples, and from the 1970s–80s part of street fashion and music subcultures. High-tops came from basketball, and hidden-wedge sneakers became fashionable in the early 2010s.

Types

By height there are low, mid and high-top models. By sole there are flat, platform and hidden-wedge versions. Uppers can be leather, suede, nubuck or textile; winter models have an insulated lining.
