Shoe customization (from "custom" — made to order) is changing the look of a mass-produced pair so that it becomes one of a kind. "Custom" names both the process and the result. Unlike bespoke shoemaking, it starts from ready-made footwear, most often sneakers or canvas shoes.
History
Painted sneakers appeared in 1980s street culture among graffiti artists, breakdancers and basketball players who wanted to stand out. In the 2000s major sportswear brands launched online configurators where buyers chose the colours of each part, and in the 2010s custom grew into an industry of its own with dedicated artists, exhibitions and collaborations. In Ukraine the scene has been growing since the mid-2010s.
Techniques
The most common method is hand painting with acrylic leather paints using a brush, sponge or airbrush. Others include sole dyeing, lace swaps and lace charms, patches and embroidery, reflective overlays and hydro dipping — transferring a printed film in water. The most complex is reconstruction, where a pair is taken apart and rebuilt with other materials.
Materials
Leather calls for flexible water-based paints that do not crack at creases. Before painting, the factory finish is removed with a preparer, a degreasing agent. The finished design is protected with a matte, satin or gloss finisher. Textiles need fabric paints, and suede needs special dyes that do not mat the nap.
Why custom is in fashion
Customization answers the demand for individuality: a pair becomes a way to speak without words. It costs less than limited collections, lets you refresh favourite shoes instead of buying new ones and makes a gift personal. Custom is valued for the handwork and the story each pair carries.
Choosing a base
Paint goes on best over smooth, light-coloured genuine leather: white and beige sneakers are the classic canvas. Black leather suits contrasting metallic and neon colours. Nubuck and suede are coloured with special dyes, textile models with fabric paints. Buy the pair in your exact size: after painting it cannot be exchanged.
Care
Custom shoes can be cleaned: use mild products, a damp cloth and microfibre without abrasives. Do not soak the pair or machine-wash it; dry at room temperature. The finisher protects the design, but it is worth renewing on the creases from time to time.
Trademarks
Customizing a pair for yourself is common practice. If the design uses other companies' logos, characters or protected images, selling such items may require the rights holder's permission. That is why artists recommend original drawings, lettering and ornaments.
