Chunky boots are heavy closed footwear reaching the ankle or slightly above, with a thick lug sole, a sturdy upper and usually laces. The group includes military-style combat boots, work boots, Chelsea and derby boots on a lug sole, and platform sneaker boots.
History
The transformation of stiff army boots into comfortable footwear is traced to 1945, when German army doctor Klaus Märtens injured his foot and could not walk in hard boots. He designed an air-cushioned sole and, with engineer Herbert Funck, started production. The first buyers of the cushioned footwear were former soldiers, workers and housewives who valued comfort. From 1960 a British factory made them under licence, and the boots became the uniform of postmen, police officers and workers, then of music subcultures from punk to 1990s grunge. In the 21st century chunky boots became a staple of the women's wardrobe.
Sole
A lug, or tread, sole has deep cleats that grip snow, wet leaves and ice. A chunky sole is usually 3–6 cm high, a platform up to 8 cm. The most common materials are rubber and TPR (thermoplastic rubber): they stay flexible in frost and grip well; polyurethane is lighter but stiffer in the cold. The welt is the strip around the perimeter joining the upper to the sole; a stitched welt makes the construction stronger.
Upper and lining
The classic option is smooth genuine leather: it holds its shape, copes with rain and is easily refreshed with cream. Nubuck and suede are softer with a matte texture but need a water-repellent treatment. Mid-season pairs are unlined or flannel-lined; winter pairs use wool or natural fur. An anatomic (wide) toe gives the toes more room and strengthens the chunky silhouette.
Types
Combat boots have high lacing with 8 or more eyelets, often with a side zip for quick wear. Lug-sole Chelsea boots have no laces, with elastic gores or a front zip. Hikers are outdoor-style boots with contrast laces and a padded collar. Sneaker boots are a hybrid of trainers and boots on a platform. Chunky-sole loafer boots are a transitional city model.
Style rules
The versatility of chunky boots rests on contrast: light fabrics, lace, chiffon and florals balance the heavy sole, while dense knits and leather amplify the attitude. To keep the leg from looking shorter, match the boots to your tights or trousers, or leave a strip of skin between the jeans hem and the boot. Midi skirts work best in straight or A-line cuts, minis with opaque tights.
How to choose
Chunky should not mean heavy: pick the pair up and check that the sole bends at the toe. Laces let you adjust the boot to a high instep, and a side zip saves time. For winter leave 0.5–1 cm of extra length for a warm sock. Try shoes on in the afternoon and always walk: the heel should not slip.
Care
Wipe smooth leather with a damp cloth and treat it with cream or wax; brush nubuck and suede dry and renew the protective spray. Rinse the tread with warm water after snow and de-icing salts so the salt does not eat into the seam. Dry boots at room temperature with the laces loosened; worn laces are easy to swap for contrast ones — the simplest way to refresh a pair.
