CheckoutDefinition
A lug sole (also called a tractor or chunky sole) is a thick shoe sole with a deep, ridged tread resembling a tractor tyre. It is used on boots, loafers, sneakers, shoes and sandals.
Name
In Ukrainian and Russian it is called a «tractor sole» because the tread looks like tractor tyres. In English fashion it is known as a lug sole or chunky sole.
History
Ridged soles first appeared on work, military and mountain footwear in the first half of the 20th century. Later in the century, chunky thick-soled boots became a symbol of youth subcultures such as punk and grunge, and since the late 2010s chunky soles have returned to women's and men's collections.
Materials
Soles are made of rubber, thermoplastic rubber (TPR), polyurethane and ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA). Rubber is the toughest and grips best on slippery surfaces, polyurethane and EVA are lighter and cushion better, and TPR combines flexibility with an affordable price.
Types of footwear
The most common styles are lace-up boots, Chelsea boots, ankle boots, loafers, platform sneakers, uggs, Mary Janes and sandals on a ridged platform.
Care
Brush dirt and de-icing salt out of the tread under warm water after each wear. Don't dry soles on a radiator, and store shoes with shoe trees so the upper keeps its shape.
