Comfortable shoes match the length, width and instep of the foot, don't pinch or rub when walking, support the heel and arch and let the toes move freely. Comfort depends on the last, materials, sole construction and accurate sizing.
The last
A last is the form a shoe is built on; it sets length, width, volume, instep height and toe shape. Anatomical lasts follow the natural shape of the foot with room for the toes. Because lasts differ, the same nominal size fits differently across brands.
Size and width
Size usually corresponds to foot length plus a small allowance. Width describes the girth at the widest part of the foot. Feet are measured in the evening, standing, both of them, going by the larger; closed shoes need about 1 cm in front of the toes.
Sole and insole
A sole that flexes at the toes follows the foot's natural roll, and cushioning materials such as EVA foam, polyurethane and memory foam soften impact. An anatomical insole supports the arch and spreads the load.
Health effects
Tight or poorly fitting shoes often cause blisters, calluses, ingrown nails and tired feet. Very high, unstable heels increase load on the forefoot. If you have foot pain or particular foot structure, discuss shoe choice with a specialist.
