History of the Holiday

Every year on July 16, Ukraine celebrates Accountant's Day. The date was chosen because on July 16, 1999, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine enacted Law "On Accounting and Financial Reporting in Ukraine" (No. 996-XIV), establishing the modern legal framework for financial reporting in the country.

Accountant's Day is not an official public holiday, but it is widely observed across the business community. On this day, employers, colleagues, and partners pay tribute to the professionals whose daily work ensures the financial integrity and stability of every organisation.

Accounting as a practice is over 5,000 years old. The earliest known financial records were inscribed on clay tablets in ancient Sumer. The double-entry bookkeeping method, documented by Luca Pacioli in 1494, remains the unchanged bedrock of modern accounting.

"An accountant is someone who solves a problem you didn't know you had, in a way you don't understand, and charges you money you don't have. But without one, you'll have nothing at all."

Today, Accountant's Day in Ukraine carries special weight. Working under martial law, with ever-changing tax legislation and NBU restrictions, Ukrainian accountants continue to process payroll, file tax returns, and maintain full financial compliance — keeping businesses alive against all odds.

The Profession in Full — Facts and Records

The Father of Accounting — Luca Pacioli

Franciscan friar and mathematician Luca Pacioli (1445–1517) described the double-entry method in his 1494 treatise "Summa de Arithmetica". A close friend of Leonardo da Vinci — who illustrated his next book "De Divina Proportione" — Pacioli's principle that every debit must have a corresponding credit has stood unchallenged for 530 years.

The Biggest Accounting Scandal — Enron

The Enron collapse (2001, USA) is the largest accounting fraud in history: the company manipulated its financial statements to conceal over $63 billion in losses. The scandal destroyed auditing giant Arthur Andersen and led directly to the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX), which fundamentally reformed corporate reporting standards across the globe.

Famous Accountants and Finance People

Mick Jagger (Rolling Stones) studied finance at the London School of Economics. Charles Addams (creator of "The Addams Family") started his career as a bookkeeper. Barry Manilow handled accounting before becoming a pop star. A sharp analytical mind is the foundation of success in any field.

Accounting Under Wartime Conditions

Ukrainian accountants continue working through extraordinary challenges: rapidly changing tax legislation, NBU regulatory restrictions, new reporting formats, and infrastructure disruptions. Day after day they process payroll, file VAT returns, and pay the unified social contribution — keeping businesses running and funding the state budget.

The Modern Accountant Is an IT Analyst

Today's accountant is not someone with a pocket calculator. They are an IT-proficient professional working in ERP platforms (SAP, BAS/1C), filing reports through the State Tax Service's electronic cabinet, using M.E.Doc and Vchasno for document exchange, and monitoring Ministry of Finance guidance in real time.

Big Four Records

Deloitte is the world's largest accounting firm: more than 330,000 employees in 150+ countries. The Big Four (Deloitte, PwC, EY, KPMG) collectively audit over 80% of Fortune 500 companies each year, ensuring transparency across trillions of dollars in the global economy.

Happy Accountant's Day — Our Congratulations

There is probably no job requiring more sustained attention than one built entirely around numbers. An accountant balances debits and credits with precision, monitors every account and expense, anticipates problems before they escalate, and saves businesses from financial errors that could otherwise prove catastrophic.

On this July day, we wish you a sharp mind and error-free work! May your books always balance, your audits pass without a single remark, and your tireless dedication receive the recognition — and the compensation — it deserves!

"There is probably no more attentive job than one where there are so many numbers. An accountant harmoniously balances debit and credit, keeps track of accounts and expenditures, and foresees trouble before it arrives!"

From the entire N-SHOES team — our sincere thanks to every accountant for your relentless work. Your precision, accountability, and professional expertise are the bedrock of stable business in Ukraine, even in the most difficult of times.

With respect, N-SHOES

N-SHOES — Footwear for People Who Value Quality and Precision

N-SHOES in Kharkiv has been providing quality footwear from Polish, Turkish, and Ukrainian manufacturers since 2009. For office professionals — accountants, financial officers, economists, and managers — we carry a curated selection of genuine leather and suede shoes that remain comfortable through a full working day and beyond.

Why the Right Shoes Matter for an Accountant

An accountant typically spends 8 to 10 hours at a desk. It might seem that footwear is irrelevant in a seated role — but static load on the foot is real and cumulative. Anatomical insoles, natural lining, and a correctly fitted last prevent fatigue and swelling. We carry models in genuine leather from brands including Rylko, Simen, Anna Lucci, and Lonza — elegant, comfortable office shoes designed for the long day.

N-SHOES Range for Office Style

Women's pumps and loafers in genuine leather and suede — Ukrainian brands Anna Lucci and Allsy. Men's leather sneakers from our own-label line N-SHOES Fabio — demi-season styles in full-grain leather. Polish brands Rylko and Simen bring decades of office-style heritage. For after-work activity — Reebok, Joma, and DC Shoes.
