A shoe size is a conventional number that shows which foot length a shoe fits. Because shoes need room for the toes to move, the size depends not only on the foot but also on the length of the last the shoe is made on.
European system (EU)
The European, or French, system measures last length in Paris points. One Paris point equals 2/3 cm, about 6.67 mm, so neighbouring EU sizes differ by 6.67 mm. This is the system most shops in Ukraine and Europe use.
British and American systems (UK, US)
The British system counts sizes in barleycorns — units of 1/3 inch, about 8.47 mm. The American system uses the same step but a different starting point: US men's sizes are about 1 larger than UK, and US women's about 2 larger. That's why the same EU size corresponds to different US numbers for men and women.
Metric system (Mondopoint)
International standard ISO 9407 describes the Mondopoint system, where the size equals foot length in millimetres, sometimes together with width. It is used for ski boots and military footwear. The former Soviet metric system also gave size as foot length, but in centimetres.
Width
Besides length, shoes differ in width — the girth of the foot at its widest point. European makers mark it with letters or numbers, and product descriptions often say "wide fit" or "standard width". People with wide feet or a high instep should pay as much attention to width as to size.
Choosing a size online
The most accurate way to choose a size online is to compare your foot length with the insole length of the model. For closed shoes the insole is usually 0.5–1.5 cm longer than the foot: less room for summer shoes, more for winter shoes worn with warm socks.
